Gypsoil® (a brand of gypsum) is a 21% calcium and 17% sulfur pelletized product that is easy to incorporate into a fall fertilizer application with DAP and potash, according to Matt Kurtz, location manager at Federated’s Rush City location.

Kurtz noted these benefits of Gypsoil application in the fall:

  1. Gypsoil saves an application pass that powder gypsum would require.
  2. Gypsoil offers a moderate and steady release of sulfur throughout the season to improve alfalfa/grass hay and soybean crop health.
  3. Gypsoil allows plants – especially high-quality alfalfa and high-yield soybeans – to uptake calcium without affecting the pH levels.
  4. Unlike other sulfur sources, Gypsoil is not hard on the soil; it is net neutral, which means nutrient uptake is improved.
  5. Continued use of gypsum products such as Gypsoil on high clay and tight textured soils can increase pore spacing because of the additional calcium added to the soil profile, which improves water infiltration.
  6. Fall fertilizer applications get nutrients in the ground now. Next season’s planting doesn’t have to wait for spring fertilizer applications.
